Introduction

There are several key steps that you should follow to complete a research task successfully; these are outlined in the following box. 

It is also important that you are organised from the start of the project to completion, this will be crucial to your success. Hence, take the time to set-up your physical or digital folders correctly before you begin research.

Finally, it is vitally important that you keep track of your sources whilst you are researching. Having a plan and organising folders prior to research will help you to do this.

Effective Research Steps

Steps for Effective Research

1. Understand the task requirements and be clear about the outcome/s required from the research.

2. Write focus questions; use 'who', 'what', 'where', 'when', 'how' and 'why' as question starters.

3. Start preliminary research with reliable and authentic sources (such as encyclopedias); these are your starting points to identify key facts and information.

4. Expand your research by targeting specific sources of information. Each page of this LibGuide provides you with different sources to target. 

5. Check your notes against the task requirements and complete any further necessary research. 

6. Use the notes to complete the final part of the task, for example a report or an essay.
