The race to arms

"Militarism is often referred to as the arms race. The build up of rival alliances      was accompanied by an armaments race between the two blocs. Each side  believed that it was essential to build up their armies and their stockpile of  weapons so as to be stronger than the other side. This build up heightened the  fear and suspicion between the two blocs, with neither being able to stop for fear  the other side would become stronger."
